Miss Linda's suggestion for cooking with Eric Carle

LADYBUG MUFFINS
Cooking with Eric Carle

For a fun cooking lesson, try making Ladybug Muffins after reading Eric Carle’s “The Grouchy Ladybug”!    Simply take an English muffin, sliced it in half, and toast it.   While the muffin is toasting, put a scoop of creamed cheese in a bowl, add yellow and red food coloring, and mix it together until it is orange.    Then spread it on the cooled muffins, and added raisins for spots.  You could also use chocolate chips!
While cooking, you can focus on the following language concepts with your child:
  • Half/whole
  • Hot/warm
  • Cold/cool
  • Colors (red, yellow, orange)
  • Actions “spread” and “mix”
  • Counting with one-to-one correspondence (raisins)
  • Mixing red and yellow creates orange
  • Responding to “What’s missing?” (show a muffin with orange creamed cheese but no raisins/spots)

Miss Chris & Miss Randi's Language Lesson - Week of 3/23/15

This week in Language Group we continued with our author study of Eric Carle by reading the book "The Mixed Up Chameleon."  We started by talking about what a chameleon is and what is different about it.  The word 'camouflage' came up and the children had some very wonderful thoughts on the definition.  We decided it meant to hide.  I made some clear chameleons and we started by placing the clear chameleon on different papers.

We then read the book.  In the book, the chameleon sees a variety of animals at the zoo and wants to have different parts of each animal.  As we read the book, we built the chameleon as it was in the book.

Once we finished the book, 4 chameleons were hidden in the classroom.  They were camouflaged!  The children looked all over the room for the chameleons and we talked about their color change and the patterns.

Miss Chris & Miss Randi's Language Lesson - Week of 3/16/15

This week in Language Group, we read the book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" by Eric Carle.  I should say the children read the book to me!  It's a wonderful story for labeling animals and colors.  When we finished reading the story, I asked the children, what do their eyes see.  They shouted out a variety of answers!  We talked about how our eyes tell us many different things about objects (color, shape, texture, etc.).  I took pictures of a variety of items (mug, spoon, toothbrush, car wheel, cat, toilet, etc) and only showed the children a portion of the picture.  We then decided if we needed to open the second window to help our eyes decide what the object was.

The children laughed when I told them their eyes tricked them, but they were also very excited when they knew what the object was!

Miss Chris & Miss Randi's Language Lesson - Week of 3/9/15

This week in Language Group we read the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."  I made a caterpillar that had a piece of string attached so the children could string each piece of food as it came up in the book.  We talked about what each item was and 'how many' there were.  Something else that came up while doing the activity were the words 'high/low' and 'fast/slow.'  These came up as the children placed the food items on the string.  When they held the string up high, the food went to the caterpillar fast.  If they held the string low, the food went slow.

You can count many items at home with your child.  How many of a particular food item (cookies, crackers), plates on the table, blue socks in the laundry, etc.  You can also move your body fast, then slow.
